Last time, we shared the concept of the reader magnet and its importance in helping expand your readership. If you missed that post, you’ll find it here.
As mentioned in part 1, a reader magnet is a free, high-value offering—anything from a bonus chapter to a prequel to an upcoming work or an exclusive short story, guide, or resource—designed to attract new readers and encourage them to join your mailing list.
Think of it as a low-barrier invitation into your creative world: it introduces your voice, showcases your style, and sparks curiosity for more. The most effective magnets are directly connected to your primary work, giving fans extra insight or content they can’t get anywhere else. By providing something genuinely engaging, you turn casual browsers into subscribers and lay the groundwork for lasting reader relationships. In this example, Dave has made a number of chapters to an upcoming novel available to read at no cost to get readers loaded into the story so that once the novel is published, they’ll want to check it out.

In part 2 (below), Dianne dives deeper into the concept and provides helpful information to position you for success.
It’s not difficult and doesn’t have to take much time. Best of all, the results can really help expand your audience.
Now that you know, make it so! Looking for more guidance? You’ll find additional resources on our Free Author Resources page.
