Why do you need a partner publisher?
Many authors think partner publishers are simply out to make a buck, whereas a traditional publisher will pay for your manuscript publishing rights. But even with a traditional deal, it’s not that simple.
Suppose you land a literary agent—great! You’ve been given a better shot at a book deal. Your advance (if you’re offered one) will likely be around $3K to $5K. Fifteen percent of your advance is paid to your agent as part of their fee. When your book is published, the publisher must collect on the advance. They do this by absorbing all proceeds from your book sales until they are paid in full. After the publisher has covered its costs, you can then expect to receive 10–15% of any remaining royalties. Depending on the printing, production, and distribution costs, your royalty may amount to 34 cents per book, 6 cents of which is paid to your agent. If your book does well and sells 3,000 copies, your agent will earn $180, plus an estimated $450 (their cut of your publisher’s advance) for a total of $630 for having done a ton of work. This is why agents are so selective.
Now think about the publisher. If they loan you $3,000 in the form of an advance, they need to earn back those funds through book sales before they profit. If your book fails to cover the publisher’s expenses, they probably won’t take your next book. Your agent may drop you as well. Or, if your agent retains you, other publishers they pitch to will know why your first publisher parted ways with you. In other words, knowing that your first book did not cover expenses is likely to discourage other publishers from signing you on. Your publishing path could stall—especially if you are publishing a book series.
Because the market is crowded, traditional publishers rarely reserve marketing dollars to support new authors. And although they publish many authors, the bulk of their income is based on a few of their best-selling authors. For this reason, their marketing budget is used to promote those authors who are likely to top the New York Times Best-Sellers List. This leaves no marketing support for your book: No tours, no interviews, no promotions. Traditional publishers 100% expect you to self-market your book, pitting you up against an estimated 3 million other books published annually.
That’s why, when we help authors self-publish, we repeat the mantra that that the first book sells the second. Beginning your career with a trustworthy, affordable, and skilled partner publisher means that you retain 100% of the royalty on each book sold. You’ll have time to build your reputation and find your fans.
