If you’re a parent, like I am, you know how kids being off their regular schedules in any way brings a little bit of havoc to adult lives. Maybe it’s sweet havoc, and havoc we cherish, but we’re also trying to write. I want to share with you two things that have helped me when I need to carve out a little work time or me time or writing time during the frequently unfilled summer days:
Outschool
If you don’t know Outschool, and you’re a parent, you should! Great classes on Zoom that our daughter has enjoyed over and over again. She has taken crochet, math, Mandarin, French, spelling, history, acrylic painting, and… cooking classes there and loved almost every one of them.
And….
Cooking
I think kids, in general, like to do experiments, and cooking is a kind of experiment. Here is a recipe my daughter has been whipping up independently (and teaching to her friends) since elementary school. One holiday season she gave her besties mugs from The Dollar Store, sprinkles, and this recipe as gifts! David and I have both QC’d this particular recipe and can attest that it is tasty, and something most kids can do independently.

And if you don’t have kids, that’s okay. I think you’ll find this may taste even better child-free… no need to share the sprinkles!
Hang in there people who share their writing spaces with littles…. fall is on the steamy and hot horizon!
To get the recipe, screenshot it, or if that won’t work, shoot me an email and I’ll reply with it as a JPG. dianne@currentwords.com
