“You Wrote It. Now Sell It.” Cross-Promotion

One of the most powerful tools authors have today is each other. Cross-promotion allows writers to share audiences, build credibility, and expand their reach without feeling like they’re shouting into a void. The key is to approach it as a partnership: you’re not selfishly asking others to share your work, you’re offering to amplify theirs in return.

Start by identifying authors whose readership overlaps with your own—whether in genre, theme, or tone. Reach out directly, not with a mass email, but with a sincere message about why you admire their work and how your audiences might benefit from a collaboration. Think beyond Facebook and Instagram posts. Suggest specific, manageable opportunities: swapping guest posts for your websites, highlighting each other’s books in your Substack newsletters, or trading social media shout-outs around a launch.

As with most marketing efforts, consistency matters. Readers respond when they see authentic enthusiasm rather than transactional plugs. If you host an ongoing series—like “Author Spotlight” features on your blog or a regular Q&A section in your newsletter—you create a repeatable format that benefits both you and your peers. Over time, these features become part of your brand, attracting new readers who know they’ll discover fresh voices through you.

It’s also helpful to think in terms of networks rather than one-off exchanges. If five authors each commit to sharing one another’s work, the potential audience multiplies dramatically. Collaboration can even extend into co-hosted online events, podcast guest appearances, or joint promotions timed around book launches or seasonal themes.

At its heart, cross-promotion works because readers trust recommendations that come from authors they already follow. When you shine a spotlight on someone else’s book, you’re not diminishing your own. Rather, you’re reinforcing a sense that you’re part of a larger literary community worth being part of. By lifting each other up, everyone grows.
