“Millie and Alva are wonderful creations… [A] successful mix of suspense and humor.” KIRKUS
“A top recommendation.”
Midwest Book Review
Meet Alva and Millie…. not your typical eighty-something sisters.
While recovering from a mild stroke, Alva’s vivid dreams of daring exploits spark a restless desire to break free from the predictability of her quiet life. Her sister Millie—a practical yet spirited counterpart—is skeptical of Alva’s newfound boldness. But when Alva suggests an impulsive road trip, not even Millie can resist the call of adventure.
What starts as a lighthearted escapade quickly spirals into a whirlwind of mischief, suspense, and unexpected heroics. As the journey unfolds, the siblings face long-buried secrets, stand up for the underdog, and confront dangerous foes with a fierceness they never knew they possessed.
Through it all, Alva and Millie prove that courage, resilience, and the drive to rewrite your story aren’t confined by age—they’re only sharpened by experience.
Witty, heartfelt, and brimming with surprises, Ignoring Alva is an unforgettable tale of sisterhood and reinvention. It proves that life’s greatest adventures can happen when you least expect them.

Ignoring Alva is a story about Alva, and her older sister, Millie. Alva has had a mild stroke, and though everything seems back to normal, Alva is having “spells.” They are like daydreams, but they are vivid and she is careful to write them down. Her daughter wants her to do something, and suggests a trip. Alva and Millie decide they will go on a road trip, heading to Niagara Falls, but stopping along the way wherever they feel like. They tell the family they are visiting friends for three weeks, and off they go. Alva, who has always been very intelligent, also feels underestimated, especially as she has gotten older. When there is a crime at a casino they are visiting, she and Millie decide to find the culprits and prove they were right, when the police think they are just old, hysterical ladies. I can’t imagine what could go wrong, but this is just the start of their crime solving antics.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved the bond between Alva and Millie, and even in their 80s, they still aggravate each other, argue, and make up, always with that sisterly bond.

I really enjoyed reading Ignoring Alva! I wasn’t sure about reading it until I read the excerpt. It sounded like it would be an adventure, and it was!
Alva has had a mild stroke, and since then she has these flashes where she’s doing something odd…mostly things she wouldn’t do. She convinces her sister Millie, who at age 81 is a year and a half older than Alva, to go on a road trip. To not tell their kids. To just take off without a destination. And they do. They set off towards a “sort of” destination…Niagara Falls. Along the way, they meet a very eclectic bunch of people at a bunch of very eclectic places! To tell you about these people and places would ruin the fun for you! At their age, they really have no fear, and they end up taking down some really bad guys.
There are so many things that I loved about this book. The banter between the sisters reminded me of my 2 sisters and me.

Escape with Dollycas’ Thoughts
Octogenarian sisters Alva and Millie decide to go on an adventure as Alva recovers from a mild stroke. Alva is pretty much back to normal, but she has strange visions at unexpected times. She and Millie want to see more of the world, well, at least the United States. They think they will have about three weeks before people start to worry, so with a destination of Niagara Falls, they set off on a road trip.
They make it out of Minnesota and into Wisconsin, but it isn’t long before this “adventure” turns into a scary drama. A little town in Wisconsin is full of secrets, lies, and evildoers, and the sisters find themselves right in the middle of it. They are written off as old, forgetful, or hysterical women who don’t have a clue, but they are determined and will not be ignored.
Ms. Khair has crafted absolutely wonderful characters in this story, and not just the two main characters. Every character had depth and growth. Alva and Millie are fantastic. That sisterly bond rings true; they love each other but annoy each other a lot, always have each other’s backs, and their banter is spot on.
